Sadness At The Death Of One Of The Giants Of Photography, Robert Whitaker
For everybody who loves the art of photography you will no doubt share my sadness at the death on September 20 of one of the giants of international photography, Robert Whitaker.
Rob was an Australian citizen with a wonderful English-born accent. My biography (‘Colours Of My Life’), my first solo album ‘For Christmas With Love’ and the front and back cover shots on my album ‘Hold On To Your Dream’ proudly display Rob’s photos of me on their covers, and I very fondly remember our many photographic sessions spanning nearly more than four decades.
Even earlier, Rob took the photos for the covers of The Seekers’ ‘Come The Day’, ‘Seen In Green’ and ‘Live At The Talk Of The Town’, as well as many compilation albums, including ‘The Best Of The Seekers’, ‘The Seekers Greatest Hits’, ‘Seekers Golden Collection’, ‘The Seekers Complete’, ‘Treasure Chest’ and ‘All Bound For Morningtown’.
Before my dear Ron came along, Rob was one of my heart-throbs for a short while. I thought he was the coolest person I knew in the Sixties, and came the closest to reminding me of the hippie/beatnik lifestyle I once aspired to in my late teenage trad jazz era. But Rob would have been wasted on me!
The world has lost one of its most creative, avant garde spirits, whose artistic strengths overcame all boundaries of logic. Salvador Dali and Rob were kindred souls indeed.
Athol, Keith and Bruce join me in sending condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Rob’s wife Sue and their family.
